Two of Wirral’s most exciting, leftfield electronic artists join us to lift the curtain at our new pop-up venue. The Near Future Opening Party, on 25th April 2020, features Evian Christ (Warp Records) and Forest Swords (Ninja Tune – DJ set) – two artists whose critical standing in the world of electronic music highlights the breadth of high-class talent that the peninsula is home to.
DJ and tastemaker Tom Ravenscroft will also perform on the opening night, providing us with a DJ set that gives a flavour of his genre-hopping, otherworldly music taste. Tom’s appetite for uncovering new music and sharing a range of sounds with fans is in keeping with the ethos of Future Yard, as we aim to showcase and highlight the most critical music being made today, no matter where it’s from.
DJ and producer Evian Christ is famed for his trance parties, which allow him to flex his muscles and showcase his love of euphoric, beat-driven, golden-era trance music. Forest Swords has built a reputation for crafting deeply moving dub soundscapes influenced by memory, language and the landscape of home (Irby, Hoylake and Thurstaton have all been referenced in his music). This DJ set will allow us to peer under the hood of an intriguing artist, allowing us a glimpse at what makes him tick.
Evian Christ (Warp Records/G.O.O.D Music) is an English electronic music producer and DJ from Ellesmere Port, who has gained prominence as a collaborator to Kanye West, Travis Scott, Danny Brown and others. His solo work frames the hedonism and euphoria of golden-era trance music in the context of a post-crash Europe – familiar melodies collide with Hollywood foley sounds, harsh noise and extreme VFX. His acclaimed Trance Party club-night – featuring everyone from Arca to Travis Scott to Scott Brown – has been attended by party-goers across London, New York, Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool.
Tom Ravenscroft introduces quality new music to listeners around the globe via a number of projects, including his regular Friday night 9pm show and Recommends show on BBC Radio 6Music. Showcasing music hand picked from as many far flung places a possible, a mish-mash of sounds painstakingly put together into a coherent mix.
Having started out DJing DnB and jungle parties in Sheffield while at university, he has gone on to play his unique selection of tunes, cultivated from nearly 10 years of building his weekly radio show, at all the major music festivals: Glastonbury, Field Day, Worldwide, ADE, Soundcrash, Green Man, Latitude, as well as parties up and down the country.
Forest Swords is electronic producer and artist Matthew Barnes, based in Liverpool. Barnes is known for rewiring sounds into innovative electronic worlds, most recently on the acclaimed Compassion album (Ninja Tune), a remix for Björk, and curated a release as part of the the DJ-Kicks compilation series. Last year he expanded into film scoring, composing the music for the Sundance award winning documentary Ghosts Of Sugar Land and releasing the In The Robot Skies original score album.
Forest Swords also collaborated on an audio installation at Future Yard festival in 2019. Working alongside artists from The Kazimier, Barnes hosted PYLON, a structure of cymbals and lights that was performed using programmed electronics and responded to the environment.
