caroline | Future Yard

We’re delighted to be welcoming Rough Trade Records’ newest signings caroline to Future Yard this autumn. The London-based group are heading out on their first UK tour in October, off the back of the release of new track Skydiving onto the library roof, on Rough Trade, along with a self-directed video.
Support on the night comes from exciting new experimental artist Dear Laika, and a solo performance from composer and musician Benjamin D. Duvall (Ex-Easter Island Head, Land Trance).
Tickets on sale now.

caroline began in early 2017, evolving out of weekly improvisation sessions. Band members brought together their shared influences, including Midwestern emo, Appalachian folk, minimalist classical and various forms of electronic music, slowly expanding their on-stage membership as the songs developed. Rough Trade released their debut single Dark Blue in March 2020, and the eight-piece were nominated as Ones To Watch at the 2020 AIM Awards, and narrowly beaten by Arlo Parks.

Skydiving onto the library roof represents a new development in caroline’s songwriting process. Built on what the band refer to as a “broken loop” with no fixed pulse or rhythm, the song represents the start of their ongoing explorations into non-gridded time signatures and improvisation.

"We’ve always been interested in patterns and repetition and that definitely features in a big way, although rather than there being a minimalistic, mechanical precision to the repetition, each one is unique."

“The essence of the song – the broken loop – came early in the process and everything else seemed to naturally evolve out of it, as if the other parts were already contained within the broken loop and just needed to be unpacked.”

Dear Laika is an artist whose music exists in the liminal space between dreamworlds and a blurry watercolour vision of reality, through the utilisation of an angelic voice and slowly blossoming piano. The 23-year-old UK-based Isabelle “Izzy” Thorn releases new album Pluperfect Mind on 29th October 2021 via NNA Tapes and Memorials of Distinction.

Pluperfect Mind is a beguiling collection of vivid lyrics and celestial song, built around piano (sometimes prepared with screws), strings, choirs and synths, and bound together with digital glitch and field recordings. Comparisons can be made to Björk, Tim Hecker or Bat For Lashes, but ultimately, Dear Laika’s exploration of the experimental and the mystical builds something intricate and intimate that is truly original and bewitching.

Following in the same improvisational spirit of caroline, Benjamin D. Duvall kicks off the show. The UK-based composer, performer and improviser is primarily active as the founding member and creative director of the Liverpool-based group Ex-Easter Island Head (2009-). His work makes frequent use of the possibilities afforded by mechanical preparations and extended playing techniques of multiple electric guitars, tuned and untuned percussion and other instruments.

Benjamin is also active as one half of the duo Land Trance with regular collaborator Andrew PM Hunt (Dialect, Raft of Trash, Outfit). Their debut album First Seance was released by Forest Swords’ Dense Truth imprint in May 2020, placing at number 14 in the Quietus’ best music of 2020 and earning a 2021 vinyl re-issue courtesy of Rocket Recordings.
