CERYS HAFANA | Future Yard | Future Yard

We are thrilled to present triple-harpist Cerys Hafana in Birkenhead on Wednesday 7th May 2025.

A composer and multi-instrumentalist who mangles, mutates, and transforms traditional music, Cerys explores the creative possibilities and unique qualities of the triple harp, and is also interested in found sounds, archival materials and electronic processing. She comes from Machynlleth, Wales, where rivers and roads meet on the way to the sea.

Cerys has won over audiences from Green Man to the Eisteddfod and from BBC 6 Music Festival to Celtic Connections with her magical, progressive sound.

FFO – Gwenno, Rachel Dadd, Joanna Newsome.

Tickets on sale now.

Her second album, 2022’s Edyf, drew inspiration from material found in the Welsh National Library’s online archive, including fragments of Psalm tunes, hymns about doomsday and philosophical musings on the length of eternity, along with some original compositions, and was selected as one of The Guardian’s Top Ten folk albums of 2022. Cerys’ latest EP, The Bitter, released earlier in 2024 is an innovative exploration of some dark English and Scottish ballads.

The Bitter blends Welsh and English traditional music, showcasing Hafana’s innovative use of the triple harp, found sounds and unique percussion. Featuring eerie reimaginings like The Bitter Withy, it explores themes of retribution, religious motifs and folk horror, intertwining ancient songs with modern experimental twists. Hafana’s artful fusion on tracks like Willy O’ Winsbury highlights her ability to merge stories across cultures, marked by her standout musical arrangements and vocal contrasts, establishing the EP as a standout contemporary traditional music experience.

FREE RAIL TRAVEL WITH MERSEYRAIL

As part of our Future Planet programme and wider sustainability efforts here at Future Yard, we’re delighted to once again introduce Sustainable Travel Month to Argyle Street – where we’re encouraging our audience to use public transport or bike to travel to events and shows here. This is part of our ongoing effort to become a carbon neutral operation, and forms part of a whole programme of activity we have planned for the year.

We’re once again pleased to be teaming up with Merseyrail to offer free rail travel to selected Future Yard shows during April and May 2025 – including to this show!

You can choose to travel from any Merseyrail train station to one of the three stations that serve Future Yard: Hamilton Square, Conway Park, or Birkenhead Central.
