Manchester Collective: Heavy Metal
We are delighted to be teaming up with Manchester Collective as we bring some of their incredible touring shows to Birkenhead. On 11th December we venture somewhere completely new with Heavy Metal promising to be a show of great intensity, dynamics and volume. Featuring a string quartet, percussion and live electronics, Manchester Collective’s performers will lead us through a series of works that are more pulse-raising than meditative. Two brand new pieces will be given their premieres in this show: from Ben Nobuto and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel). These will be performed alongside composition by Bryce Dessner (The National), Dobrinka Tabakova and Michael Gordon.
Manchester Collective shows are renowned for their incredible atmospheres and intense experiences. Their musicians bring new life to classic arrangements and present brand new compositions from contemporary artists who break the walls between classical and modern worlds.
Tickets for this show are on sale on a pay what you can basis. There are two ticket options available, priced at £10 and £20.
Tickets on sale Wednesday 18th August.
Manchester Collective presents Heavy Metal. This is going to be a noisy show.
Expect percussion, live electronics, and an amplified string quartet. It’s not going to be a meditative listening experience. But sometimes, we all just need to scream into a pillow.
Ben Nobuto’s work is utterly contemporary. His music assimilates and responds to the dizzying array of digital media that Generation Z have lived with since birth. His first language is the internet. On, off, and on again. Attention and fragmentation. Manchester Collective are proud to premiere his brand-new work for strings, electronics, and percussion.
Alongside work by British-Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova, Bryce Dessner (of The National), and Michael Gordon (founder of legendary new music outfit Bang on a Can), the Collective will also give the world premiere of a new work by Sebastian Gainsborough, aka Vessel. Seb’s compositions tend towards the heavy and intense, but this will be something else altogether.
Manchester Collective is a new kind of arts organisation, built for a fresh and diverse musical world. Known for their experimental programming and daring collaborations, Manchester Collective perform a combination of cutting-edge contemporary music, classical masterpieces and staged work to a hungry, new audience. From concert halls to warehouses, nightclubs to festivals (and now Future Yard), you can find the Collective in a variety of settings, where the aim is to create intimate and intense human experiences inspired by music, for everyone.
The 21/22 season is Manchester Collective’s most ambitious season to date – five years on since their formation and following performances at the Proms and Wigmore Hall, they’re now touring ground-breaking work to concert halls and underground spaces across the country, and beyond. Heavy Metal is a whole new experience for them and us.
