POP29: A CLIMATE SYMPOSIUM | Future Yard

Future Yard is pleased to announce POP29: A Climate Symposium; a day of debate, performance, celebration, and dialogue as we explore how the DIY music sector is responding to the climate emergency.

POP29 will explore the power of music in the climate debate and the impact of live touring, whilst shining a focus on emerging collective action in the creative space.

Taking place on November 20th – during the COP Climate Conference – we will be hosting a series of workshops throughout the day, exploring how various venues, businesses, and musicians navigate sustainability, audience engagement, developing networks, and the climate crisis as a whole. People in attendance will range from local artists and businesses passionate about sustainability, to representatives from nationally significant arts organisations.

This will be followed in the evening by a live show headlined by Cosmo Sheldrake. A UK-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, live improviser, and field recordist, Cosmo creates music that speaks to the urgency and possibility of our times.

The daytime symposium runs between 1pm and 5pm, and takes place in Future Yard’s Live Room and workshop spaces.

The evening live show starts at 8pm, with Cosmo Sheldrake joined by support artists (TBC).

Tickets for the daytime event and evening live show on sale now.

Tickets for the daytime event are free but must be reserved.

POP29: A CLIMATE SYMPOSIUM

The day will also see the launch of Future Yard’s updated Sustainability Roadmap, documenting our journey over the past two years, and setting out some ambitious targets for the future.

Originally produced in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, Future Yard’s Sustainability Roadmap has been conceived as an open resource for other music venues and creative spaces. Society’s response to the climate emergency must be collaborative and this is our opportunity to share our ideas and actions with the wider music and creative community.

During the day, workshops will include:

How can venues communicate sustainability to their audiences? A workshop for sharing our processes and why we do it to encourage public transport use – an open discussion around the importance of engaging our audiences with climate action.

What does a sustainable live event look like? Discussing easy wins and tips for best practice, along with big picture systemic changes.

How can we collaborate to decarbonise the culture sector? Exploring the positive impact of working collectively for arts organisations and their audiences

Contributors include:

Shift Liverpool, Bristol Beacon, Southbank Centre, Arts Council England, 2030hub, Theatre Green Book, GMAST, Music Declares Emergency, Factory International, Shakespeare North Playhouse, Kitty’s Laundrette, SAIL

COSMO SHELDRAKE

Cosmo is a UK-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, live improviser and field recordist.

His music ranges widely from celebratory anthems to soulful elegies and riotous party numbers. Some of these haunting songs have grown out of field recordings of birds, whales, fish, frogs, and fungi, and more. Running through all his work is a belief that the living world is a noisy and musical place with the power to change how we think, feel, and imagine. Together with his human and non-human collaborators, Cosmo creates music that speaks to the urgency and possibility of our times.
