EarthSonic
We are delighted to be taking part in EarthSonic Local, a brand new nationwide project sees music venues unite to train young people to create music inspired by nature. And we’re looking to hear from local musicians to take part in the project, with the aim of making new pieces of music from recorded sounds of nature.
EarthSonic is a global project telling the story of climate change and biodiversity through music, and is the global climate initiative delivered by In Place Of War. The new EarthSonic Local project will recruit 400 18-30 year-olds to document and create music telling the stories of climate change. Funded by Arts Council England and in partnership with Roland, the initiative will offer sound recording equipment and samplers, workshops and a series of live events at eight venues across England, helping them to develop their skills, record sounds of nature and create brand new music.
EarthSonic Local aims to increase awareness of climate change and biodiversity by providing new opportunities for young people to take action. Participants will be primarily young people, musicians, sound engineers, and local activists, recruited by the venues to reflect the diversity of the communities.
The participating venues are: Future Yard, Bootleg Social (Blackpool), The Bunker (Sunderland), The Cornish Bank (Falmouth), The Hot Tin (Faversham), The Parrish, Exeter Phoenix, The Sugarmill (Stoke-On-Trent).
Recordings made by participants in the project will also contribute to EarthSonic’s Sounds Archive, an open and accessible archive of nature recordings made by scientists, nature sound recordists, indigenous communities, and others around the world.
Working in partnership with eight local arts venues and Music Venue Trust, EarthSonic Local will culminate in major national takeovers of museum spaces in Manchester and London, where the participants will share their music, journey and experiences. Music created throughout the project will also be released in a brand new album through EarthSonic’s record label.
TAKE PART
We’re looking for 50 musicians from across the Liverpool City Region to take part in this project and contribute music to the project. Workshops on field recording, equipment and music making will take place at Future Yard as part of the project, on 22nd October, 12th November, 26th November and 3rd December.
To apply, complete the form below. You must be between 18 and 30 years old after 1st September 2025.
At the end of the projects participants who have completed the course will receive a certificate of completion from Music and Sonic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. Original research and course evaluation will be conducted independently by researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Hull and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
EarthSonic is a global project telling the story of climate change and biodiversity through music. It is proven that young people have a strong capacity to change their behaviours, more than any other demographic. The project aims to distill big complicated data and reach young people’s hearts and minds, inspiring a clear call to action and unifying a movement to tackle climate change.
