KLF – the duo that famously burned a million pounds are building a People’s pyramid of bricks in Birkenhead, filled with people’s cremation ashes.
The Peoples Pyramid is an ancient monument being built now: by the people, for the people, of the people.
Every 23rd of November, on the Birkenhead Day of the Dead people gather to lay new bricks into a monument that will take generations to complete. The People’s pyramid, a solid brick monument, will eventually contain 34,592 bricks of Mu. This process, branded MuMufication, is a new form of memoralisation, both a funeral ceremony and a celebration of life.
Each brick contains the ashes of a loved one, brought by their family and friends to be laid in the Pyramid in a ceremony of remembrance and celebration.
The day starts with the Skool of the Spektacle, where the people gather and prepare for the day. Then this is followed by the Krossing of the Mersey, then to a procession to the bricklaying site. The bricklaying ceremony will then take place, ending with an After-Life Party.
Everyone is invited to witness the bricklaying of the Peoples Pyramid in an event that is equal parts absurd spectacle and powerful community ritual.
