FUTURE PLANET
Future Yard was established to reimagine the role of a live music venue, to find new ways of bringing about profound social and cultural change in Birkenhead, utilising the power of music to bring about these changes. Through our training programmes, artist development work, community activities and inclusive programming, we’ve started along this road. But, if we are to achieve true change, we must tackle the great challenge of our times: the climate emergency.
This belief is at the heart of our founding ethos. Since we opened we have implemented a number of measures to reduce our environmental impact, including:
- Renewable electricity powered by Ecotricity
- Vegan/vegetarian pizza kitchen
- Plug + Play initiative increasing artist public transport use by 25%
- Local and independent bar offer
Perhaps our biggest step was our first one, tracking the impact we have. This has helped us understand where we are now, and where we want to be. Most importantly, we discovered that 76% of our overall impact is produced by our audience traveling to the venue.
This proves that the success of our sustainability objectives, and wider societal ambitions, are entirely dependent on our community. Collaboration with our networks of audiences, artists, and businesses is fundamental. We have made this a central tenet of our sustainability work. Last year we engaged our audience with themes of climate and collective action with a number of activities:
- Wax + Gears – pedal-powered music festival
- Mosh Tots Earth Special – nature-based twist to our regular gig for kids
- Sustainable Travel Month – free transport to gigs during April
- POP29 – climate conference exploring the power of music in the climate debate
In 2025, we are delighted to present Future Planet, powered by Ecotricity – the home of sustainability at Future Yard. However you, our audience, engage with Future Yard, we will be platforming the climate debate, exploring solutions to the crisis, and sharing our positive vision for the future. It’s a pleasure to be joined on this journey by Ecotricity, the providers of our renewable electricity supply and an organisation at the heart of the green revolution.
We see a future where Birkenhead has been fundamentally reimagined, where sustainable transport, clean energy and a circular economy are at the core of a bold civic identity. This is an eminently achievable vision, and one we are proud to be a part of creating.

Alongside our combined artist and industry engagement work, we’ll be hosting a series of events throughout 2025 and encouraging our audience to consider themes of climate and collective action at each.
